Implementing and Using Microsoft 365 / Power Platform Apps Properly

Where Will Your Data Be Stored? The Choice Is Yours

Microsoft provides local datacentres in Germany, the United Kingdom, Austria, and Switzerland. This means that Azure, Microsoft 365, Dynamics 365, and Power Platform services can keep your organisation’s core data within your chosen country or region — while still benefiting from the security, scale, and innovation of the global Microsoft Cloud.

  • Germany: Customer data can be hosted in German datacentres.
  • United Kingdom: Data is stored within UK data centres
  • Austria: Local hosting is available from the Vienna datacentre region
  • Switzerland: Two datacentres in Zurich and Geneva support local data residency.

Important: Your Microsoft 365 Tenant Setup Matters

To benefit from local data residency, your Microsoft 365 tenant must have been provisioned in that specific region.

  • Tenant creation: The tenant’s address (set when it was first created) determines its default geography.
  • Existing tenants: If your tenant was set up before these regions were available, your data may still reside in another EU location (for example, Ireland or the Netherlands).
  • Tenant moves: Microsoft occasionally offers data residency moves when new regions launch. If eligible, customers can request their data be migrated into the local region.

How to check your region

  1. Check your tenant’s current region
    • In the Microsoft 365 admin centre, go to Settings → Org Settings → Organisation Profile → Data Location.
    • This will show where Exchange, SharePoint, and Teams data is currently stored.
  2. Confirm your requirements
    • If your organisation needs data to remain in Germany, UK, Austria, or Switzerland, confirm that your tenant aligns with this requirement.
  3. Plan for migration if needed
    • If your tenant is in another region, speak with Microsoft or TPG about whether a data residency move programme is available.
